Learn how to keep your family law legal costs down by following our top tips
There is no question that family law can be draining physically, emotionally and financially for all parties involved. To try and keep your family lawyer costs down there are a range of things that you can do.
Get legal advice from family lawyers
By having a qualified and experienced family lawyer by your side during legal matters you can understand your rights, responsibilities and obligations throughout the whole process, whether it’s a divorce, or a big dispute. I’m often in the family law courts in Melbourne so I hear first-hand what the Judge’s have to say, and how they are actually interpreting the law. I know what you should and should not be focussing on.
While saving money on the hourly fee may be nice. it can cost you more in the long run. Finding a quality lawyer who takes the time to understand your situation is more important than finding the cheapest one.
Act on the advice
When your lawyer asks you to provide something, do it. If you don’t understand something or are worried, ask questions and sort it out. If you don’t want to do what the lawyer is asking you, be upfront and work out an alternative together.
Don’t try and DIY!
The law is a complex and detailed profession. Don’t try and represent yourself or prepare your own documents. Even lawyers don’t tend to represent themselves in family court matters!
Don’t drag it out
The longer you drag out a family law matter and keep it in the Federal Court to ‘spite’ your ex or make them suffer through it, the more that it will end up costing you as well.
Compromise is king
You may be attached to certain property or items you once shared with your now legal adversary. If you are prepared to compromise on things you will find the process moves a lot quicker and you can get on with your life sooner.
When you are going through family law legal proceedings it’s not a nice experience. When you have a firm representing you that understands the process, the potential outcomes and can advise you of the quickest and cheapest way to maximise what you receive in a settlement, you are sure to save on family law legal costs.
